14th Street Canal
Project | New York, NY
|
| The New York State Council on the Arts awarded
Aaron Parker a grant for a bold design that would demonstrate principles
for reintroducing public spaces into the urban fabric. Parker proposed
to convert 14th Street, one of the busiest commercial corridors in
Manhattan, into a canal. The idea springs from the street’s
historic role as a boundary and seam – physically, between the
unplanned Dutch settlement roads of Lower Manhattan and the 1811 Commissioner’s
grid to the north; and socially, between Greenwich Village and the
uptown districts above 14th. |
